SOUTHWICK – Police Chief Mark Krynicki has given his notice of retirement to the Board of Selectmen.
Board Chairman Arthur Pinell confirmed Saturday that Krynicki’s letter was given in the board mail folder on Friday.
“He called me last week and told me he would be submitting a letter to us,” said Pinell.
Krynicki is set to retire in May.
The board will discuss its options to fill the position.
“Once we accept his letter of retirement, there are a number of processes we could take,” said Pinell. “The last time a police chief position was filled, the board decided to look outside the department, as well as within. It could very well stay within the department.”
Pinell said this is the opportunity to make changes to the job description, if any are desired. Pinell said he will miss Krynicki.
“I was on the board when he was hired and he has been a productive chief, and a good chief for Southwick,” Pinell said.
One of Krynicki’s strengths, he said, was communication.
“That was something we were looking for and he had good communication, especially with the Board of Selectmen,” said Pinell.
Pinell also noted that Krynicki, who has been chief for eight years, has led the department through tough economic times.
“He worked during tight budgets and always advocated for the men and women of the police department to get what Southwick needed,” he said. “I will miss him.”
