Chimney fire spreads

WESTFIELD – The residents of a Pequot Point Road residence escaped injury early this morning after a chimney fire spread to the walls of the structure.
City police report that a 911 call alerted them to the fire at 1:17 a.m. today and firefighters were dispatched.
Officer Michael Kane reports he arrived minutes before firefighters and found that the fire had spread to the walls adjacent to the chimney.
The firefighters report two engines responded immediately and, when the fire was found to have spread to the walls, the platform truck and other apparatus were dispatched.
The firefighters report that smoke and water damage was confined to the first floor of the dwelling although smoke damage extended throughout the building.
The damage to the structure was estimated by firefighters to be valued at $25,000 and the value of property lost in the fire was put at $10,000.
