City reaches tentative agreement with teachers

WESTFIELD – After weeks of Work to Rule action by teachers, it appears that a tentative agreement has been made between the city of Westfield’s school district and the Westfield Education Association.
The agreement is still tentative, contingent on a vote of ratification by union members on October 16, but it appears that the city’s teachers will have a new contract soon.
Westfield Education Association President Lori Hovey said she could not comment on the parameters or any other aspect of the deal, other than saying that a tentative agreement has been made and that it is “subject to ratification in it’s entirety by both the WEA and the School Committee.”
“I think it is a fair and equitable deal,” she said.
Hovey said that there will be a general membership meeting of the WEA on Thursday, October 10, followed by a ratification meeting on Wednesday, October 16, which is when the vote to accept or reject the tentative contractual agreement will occur.
“It’s been a difficult time for everyone,” said Westfield Superintendent Dr. Suzanne Scallion. “We have a great team, and we’re grateful for all of their hard work in this.”
Scallion couldn’t comment on the parameters of the tentative agreement, but did say that she is proud of the hard work of the district’s teachers, and with the conclusion of the MCAS tests, is excited to “share some great data with the community soon”.
