WESTFIELD – A clown seen driving on Union Street was pulled over on Morris Street and arrested after a larceny at a Halloween store on East Main Street Tuesday.
An employee of the Spirit Halloween store on East Main Street called police at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday to report that three persons who appeared to be intoxicated had been in the store and one had concealed a mask valued at $20 in his trousers before the trio left the store. An employee followed them into the parking lot and noted the registration number of the 2013 Dodge Dart in which they drove away.
Minutes later, Officer Zachary Coderre reported that the car, operated by a driver wearing a clown mask, had passed him on Union Street.
The car was next seen – and stopped by Officer Joshua Krassler – a few minutes later on Morris Street.
Officer Aleksandr Golenev reports that the suspect was wearing a foam clown mask when he was stopped and told officers “I’ll go back and pay for it.” The price tag from the store was found at the man’s feet.
Sajjad Ibrahim, 20, of 136 Meadow St., Apt. B, Westfield, was arrested for shoplifting by concealing merchandise.
Arraigned Wednesday in Westfield District Court before Judge John P. McKenna, the charge was decriminalized and he was found to be responsible for a civil shoplifting charge. He was assessed $100.
