Congamond Lake docks need to be removed

SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Conservation Commission wants to remind dock owners on Congamond Lake that they need to remove their docks from the water by Saturday as the official deadline for removal is Saturday, December 1.

According to the Conservation Commission, of the 363 docks that are on Congamond Lake, from Southwick to West Suffield, only 204 dock owners have paid their fees.

If dock owners do not remove their dock by Saturday, the Conservation Commission will issue a fine of $50 per day until the dock is out of the water.

Dick Grannells, Chairman of the Lake Management Committee, noted that pieces of the dock will break up  over the winter if they’re left in the water, causing debris to be all over the ice.

“It’s a safety issue, it’s a liability issue,” said Grannells.

Southwick Chief of Police Kevin Bishop, who’s also the harbormaster for Congamond Lake, also mentioned that not removing the docks from the water could affect the ice fishermen this winter.

“It’s all about the safety,” said Bishop.
