Councilor Hoose: Ward 3 update

Hello Ward 3
A lot has happened since my last report to you.
First, I want to give special thanks to Rep. John Velis for his legislation regarding Stolen Valor. Even though I am not big on war, I am a vet, and I believe that you earn what you get. It is despicable that someone would steal the status as someone who served to collect benefits. I have also begun conversations with him regarding the idea of a civics test to graduate.
2nd, Political Irony: remember last year when everyone was talking about the $12-13 million we had as surplus funds, and I said the numbers were bogus? That, after other expenses, and obligations, and debts yet to be paid plus the cost of snow removal, etc., that we did not have such an amount? Well, those who promoted the surplus are now concerned that we are running out of funds. So be careful what you hear. Private sector costs are not going down. One of our councilmen was stunned to hear that the cost of architectural drawings for a fire station could run over $100,000, and as much as $200,000. Remember the cost of not trusting government is creating another layer of bureaucracy, to get a piece of the action.
3rd, I attended the meeting of senators at HCC, for the chance to speak to my old friend Sen. Stan Rosenberg, now senate president. I wanted to push the issue of more funds for community policing that were cut from last year’s budget. Intervention and prevention are a lot cheaper than the costs of crime and the criminal justice processes.
I am glad to see the new trash/recycle system is working. I did recommend thatin the future, due to the ethnic diversity in Ward 3, that it would help if we could get the flyers translated, and recommended who could do it for little to no costs to the city.
One to be aware of is the plan for the PVTA station on Arnold St. The route was to go up School, onto Washington, then down Arnold. Anyone going down Arnold knows how narrow it is and with the snow, it is hard for two cars to pass one another. So I am exploring alternative routes with the help of those in Planning and Development. Along with this I am keeping up with the Gas Light District schedule which shall start on Church St. in the spring. And, I will be involved in plans for a new regional animal shelter for cats and dogs, and other animals, as well. Also, I have been a “greeter” at Tiger’s Pride, the vocational school restaurant on Wed., and Fridays; great food and people so stop by and say hello. Speaking of the Vocational School have you seen the stone masonry work on the side entrance to city hall, great job. And, I am so happy we passed the funds for Hangar II project to start an air plane repair program. Only the 2nd in the nation! And, if you noticed they are getting good media coverage on TV for all their good work.
Lastly: safety, PLEASE be careful driving over Smith Ave., with children sledding, and students crossing the street. We are looking into helping that situation. I am looking into No Parking signs on Pearl St., due to the narrowness. And please continue to clear fire hydrants, and BE CAREFUL, with all the snow banks, cars exiting driveways, or from side streets require our fullest attention.
Don’t be afraid to say hi, as I walk Ollie, or to E-Mail me. Thanks.
Your Ward 3 City Councilor,
Brian Hoose
