The hero badge is one of three different badges that must be attained and is earned when a cub scout recognizes someone or multiple people in the community who have had a positive impact in their life.

The three boys, who are nine and 10-years-old, were Matthew Dunham, Killian Arnette, and Jason Gough.

Gough’s heroes are Southwick Police officer David Massai and Southwick firefighter Matt Gough, his father. Gough talked about why his dad is one of his heroes.

“He saves people and helps them without a second thought,” said Gough.

Dunham’s hero is his teacher Mrs. Gates.

“She helps me at reading and math,” said Dunham.

Besides Mrs. Gates, Dunham’s grandfather, Carmine Manning, is his other hero.

“He helped me walk when I was little,” said Dunham.

Rachele Dunham, who’s the cub scout leader for pack 338, was very proud of all three boys presenting their heroes and earning their latest badge.

“I have had these boys in my group since first grade and it’s amazing to see them grow into young men,” said Dunham. “They’re really kind of recognizing that these people are influencing their life.”

According to Dunham, there are 35 boys and girls in Southwick Cub Scout Pack 338.
