WESTFIELD – David “Digger” Bates, a lifelong resident of Westfield, lost his battle with COVID-19 on April 15, 2020. He attended Westfield Public Schools. He received an undergraduate degree from Westfield State University and graduate degrees from Smith College and Colgate University. David loved teaching. He taught middle school science for many years before moving on to become a Vice Principle at Agawam High School. When he retired, David returned to the classroom as a volunteer reading teacher in Westfield. Working with these young students brought him much joy.
He was predeceased by his parents Thelma Kenyon Bates and William Bates. David will be greatly missed by his wife of 65 years, Mary O’Connor Bates. He and Mary enjoyed years of travel, golf, and the companionship of many dear friends. He was an avid Boston sports fan.
