Eleven-year-old Westfield girl to sing at benefit concert

WESTFIELD – An 11-year-old girl from Westfield will be performing at a local benefit concert on Sunday. Sophie Lawry will be singing at Jericho, The Bureau for Exceptional Children and Adults, which is a camp and catholic organization on Northampton Street in Holyoke.

The concert is being held to benefit the work Jericho does with disabled people and their families. The concert at Jericho means so much more to Lawry than just performing. Lawry’s grandmother, the late Brigid Boyle, had MS (multiple sclerosis) and would always enjoy going to mass at Jericho. This will be Lawry’s second year in a row singing at this event and her grandmother’s memory is a big part of it.

“I just loved seeing her smiling face when she was there,” said Lawry.

The concert starts at 1 p.m. and Lawry will be singing alongside Dane Kane and Friends, as well as other artists.

“We’re like a big family,” Lawry said about singing with Dan Kane and Friends.

Lawry began singing at age 4 when she joined a camp that the Dan Kane and Friends host every year. She proceeded to win a talent show at five-years-old, which helped launch her start of singing in front of crowds.

After auditioning and being selected by a panel of judges in April, Lawry sang the national anthem at a New England Revolution game at Gillette Stadium. Lawry then went on to sing the anthem at a Boston Cannons lacrosse game at Harvard Stadium. The 11-year-old has also sung for the Springfield Thunderbirds, Pawtucket Red Sox, and at the 2016 Babe Ruth World Series in Westfield.

An outdoor mass at 11 a.m. Sunday will precede the event. In order to attend the benefit, you can visit www.jerichobeca.org to purchase tickets. Tickets cost $15 and $10 for children 12-years-old and younger. For more information, call Jericho at 413-538-7450 or email [email protected].
