Geology of Southwick: The Southwick Public Library is pleased to have Geologist Richard Little at the library on Monday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. for his program The Geology of Southwick. Come and explore a billion years of history revealed in the rocks and landscape of Southwick and vicinity. This program will take you through the time before Pangea, the break-up of a supercontinent, and the effects of glaciers and Lake Hitchcock. Mr. Little will bring samples to illustrate this program, including the rare Armored Mud Balls found in the Connecticut River Valley. He will also bring copies of his book Dinosaurs, Dunes, and Drifting Continents for sale. You are guaranteed to be entertained and educated by this fast-paced program. This program is made possible with funding provided by the Friends of the Southwick Public Library. Richard Little is a Geology Professor Emeritus at Greenfield Community College, and was inducted into the Massachusetts Science Educator Hall of Fame in 2004.

Socrates’ Café the next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22 in the library’s Community Room at 6:30 p.m. The group is meeting a day later than usual due to Southwick’s Town Meeting, which will occur on the third Tuesday of May. The topic for May is “Is progress, progress?” The group is facilitated by David Meczywor. Socrates Café is an opportunity for ordinary people to wrestle with the Big Questions, in a discussion. Alternative viewpoints are encouraged and explored. All discussion takes place in an atmosphere of respect and encouragement. People from all walks of life, are encouraged to attend and contribute their unique views.

Adult Cookbook Club will meet on May 28 at 6:30 p.m. In May, the members will be making and sampling recipes from Paris. The group will be using the book Barefoot in Paris: Easy French Food You Can Make at Home by Ina Garten. Prior to the meeting on Tuesday, May 28, please email [email protected] with the subject Cookbook Club your first two choices of the recipe you’d like to make. The library will contact you to let you know which recipe to bring or if you need to make another selection. This helps to prevent us from having duplicate items being prepared. New adults are welcome to pick-up a cookbook and sign-up at the Circulation Desk. Please be advised: Neither the food served at cookbook club, and prepared in home kitchens, nor the facilities have been inspected by the state or the local public health agency.
