Events at the Southwick Public Library
Adult Color, Chat & Cookies: The Southwick Public Library group Adult Color, Chat & Cookies will be meeting earlier in the month due to Presidents’ Day. The group will meet on Monday, February 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room. Adults are invited to attend. All materials and snacks are provided for free. There is no need to register.
Learn What Life Was Like for a Civil War Soldier: Retired Storrowton Village Museum Director, Dennis Picard, will present his program “Springing to the Call: A Visit with a Civil War Soldier” at 7 p.m. February 5 at the Southwick Public Library. Picard will share stories of how the common soldier lived and show examples of their uniforms and equipment. He will conduct his program in period attire. “Springing to the Call: A Visit with a Civil War Soldier” is free and open to the public.
Southwick Library’s Adult Book Discussion Group Spring Series Starts: The Adult Book Discussion will resume on Wednesday, February 6 at 1:30 p.m. The spring discussion series will open with Alice McDermott’s book The Ninth Hour. All adults that are interested in discussing The Ninth Hour are invited to attend. John Hart’s thriller The Last Child will be the subject of the groups meeting on March 6 at 1:30 p.m. The review in the “New York Times” reads –“Bestselling author of The King of Lies and Down River achieves his most significant work to date, in this intricate, powerful story of loss, hope, and courage in the face of evil.” Those interested in participating in the discussion on March 6 and want to purchase a copy of the book may at the February 6 discussion. After the discussion, copies will be available for sale at the Circulation Desk for those planning to attend the March discussion. Adults interested in participating and don’t wish to purchase a copy may check-out our copy or receive a copy through interlibrary loan.
Southwick Public Library’s Adult Cookbook Club Explores Greek Islands’ Recipes: The Cookbook Club will be cooking and sampling foods from the Greek Islands at their meeting of the Adult Cookbook Club on February 26 at 6:30 p.m. The group will be using the cookbook The Foods of the Greek Islands: Cooking and Culture at the Crossroads of the Mediterranean by Julia Child Award winner, chef Aglaia Kremezi. The cookbook is now available for check-out at the Circulation Desk. Please make sure to add your name to the registration list when checking-out a copy of the cookbook. Prior to the meeting on Tuesday, February 26, please email your first two choices of the recipe you’d like to make. The email should be sent to [email protected] with the subject Cookbook Club. You also have the option of calling the library at 569-1221 and inform us of your two choices. The library will contact you to let you know which recipe to bring or if you need to make another selection. This helps to prevent us from having duplicate items being prepared. New adult members are always welcome to pick-up a cookbook and sign-up at the Circulation Desk. Please be advised: Neither the food served at cookbook club, and prepared in home kitchens, nor the facilities have been inspected by the state or the local public health agency.
Socrates Café Starting at SPL: The Southwick Public Library will be hosting a Socrates Café group on the third Tuesday, of the month starting on March 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room. Socrates Café is an opportunity for ordinary people to wrestle with the Big Questions, in a facilitated, volunteer-led discussion. Alternative viewpoints are encouraged and explored. All discussion takes place in an atmosphere of respect and encouragement. People from all walks of life, are encouraged to attend and contribute their unique views. More information will be available in March.
