WESTFIELD-An action packed day for families of veterans, current service members and Gold Star families is planned Aug. 10 at YMCA Camp Shepard.
“There is no cost for this event but sign ups are mandatory,” said Todd Crevier, founder of New England Adventures, noting it is essential to ensure there is enough food for the picnic lunch.
The third annual Family Day, hosted by New England Adventures and the YMCA of Greater Westfield, is slated from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. art the camp at 370 Northwest Road.
“We understand the importance of conducting events like this because families serve too,” said Crevier. “Throughout the year, New England Adventures hosts a variety of programs for veterans and current service members, but we know it is also important to have events so that families can spend a fun day together, as well as meet other military families.”
Andrea Allard, Westfield YMCA CEO, echoed those sentiments.
“It is important for not-for-profits to support each other in any way possible,” said Allard. “We have a wonderful facility at YMCA Camp Shepard and it is an honor to be able to host New England Adventures. It is our way of thanking veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice.”
While the gates will open at 9 a.m., Crevier plans the official kick-off of the day at 10.
“People can stay for an hour or stay all day,” said Crevier.
All events and activities are free and include a ropes course, archery, swimming, kayaking, fishing, face painting, and a Home Depot craft project.
“We suggest that families bring a few snacks and water to stay hydrated during the day,” said Crevier, adding that the picnic lunch will include hamburgers, hot dogs, macaroni salad, chips, Gatorade and water, and a dessert.
Crevier recommended that participants wear sneakers or close-toed shoes and refrain from wearing flip flops and sandals.
“Hiking boots are suggested if people want to walk the hiking trails,” said Crevier, adding, “the camp also has a locker room for storing items for the day.”
Another highlight of the day will be entertainment by New England Reptile Shows.
“This is the third year we’ve had New England Reptile Shows,” said Crevier. “They bring lizards and snakes and allow everyone to interact with them.”
Camp Shepard director Lauren Caprile will be the lead staff person for the event, assisted by the many counselors who call the camp home for the summer.
“We are very thankful for Lauren and her staff who run all of the stations for us,” said Crevier.
Allard noted that offering the camp resources to nonprofits like New England Adventures is an important service to the area.
“As a not-for-profit we can offer in-kind services to not-for-profits such as New England Adventures,” said Allard. “At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health, and our neighbors.”
Crevier echoed that sentiment.
“I’m very excited that as we are growing, the networking we are doing continues to build relationships,” said Crevier, noting that a host of organizations will also be on hand to share resources with families.
