Gators take bite out of rivalry night

WESTFIELD – The Gateway Regional High School basketball program owned rivalry night.
The Gateway boys’ hoops team defeated St. Mary’s 57-36 and the Lady Gators overwhelmed Westfield Voc-Tech, 64-16.
Austin Cook sparked the Gateway boys with a triple-double. Cook scored 24 points, hauled down 14 rebounds, and collected 10 steals. He also had three blocks.
Curtis Dowers had 10 points for the Gators. Matt Plasse led St. Mary’s with 10.
The Gateway girls had a pair of double-digits points-scorers – Chelsea Merritt (13 points) and Chelsi Derrig (12).
Nadine Tran led Westfield Voc-Tech with 8.
Holyoke Catholic 31, Southwick-Tolland 30
Melissa O’Neill scored 15 points for Southwick-Tolland, which lost a heartbreaker.
Southwick JV 31, Holyoke Catholic 27
Jacqui Richard (11 points) and Ashley Shea (9) led Southwick, the young Bi-County West regular season champ.
Amherst 54, Westfield 39
Beka Santiago scored a team-high nine points for Westfield, which only trailed 13-11 after one quarter.
BOYS’ RESULTS
Smith Voke 70, Westfield Voc-Tech 59
Bryan Robles had 14 points, and Rafael Ayala and Logan Vanvueldhuizen each finished with 13 for Voc-Tech, who cut the deficit to five late before fading.
Westfield Voc-Tech JV 61, Smith Voke 47
Jason Blondin hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points for Westfield VT.
