Father Shea K of C Sponsored Free Throw Contest

On Wednesday afternoon, January 11, the Fr. Shea Knights of Columbus Council 11178 held their annual free throw contest at Powder Mill Middle School. The competition is open to any boy or girl between the ages of 10-14.

There are 10 groups who compete. The groups are ages 10, 11, 12, 13, and age 14 for boys, and the same age groupings for the girls. This year there were 62 young participants. The Council winners in each classification now go on to the district competition which will be held on Sunday, Feb 12 at 1 p.m., at St John’s the Evangelist Church Center, located at 833 Main Street in Agawam.

The winners of the district proceed onto a regional competition that will be held on Saturday, March 24 at St. Thomas the Apostle’s gym. St. Thomas the Apostle is located at 63 Pine Street in West Springfield. The gym’s entrance is on Route 20, opposite to Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home. It opens at 8 a.m. with registration starting at 9. The regional winners go onto the state finals at a location that is to be determined in the spring.

The Fr. Shea Council would like to thank Mrs. Hendrickson and Mr. Archambeault, PMMS Physical Education teachers for their cooperation and outstanding support in setting up and helping to run this competition. We would also like to recognize the senior leadership team, Principal Ronald Peloquin and Vice Principal Chad Joyal, along with all the great teachers, parents and supporters of Power Mill Middle School for making this such a memorable event.

In addition, the Council would also like to commend all 62 youngsters, their parents, and siblings for their good sportsmanship and cooperation while the shooting was taking place. In the event the winner of an age category is unable to participate in the district competition, the runner-up will represent Southwick. All of the youngsters participating were presented with a certificate of participation from Fr. Thomas Shea Council #11178 Knights of Columbus. The winners were awarded a trophy and an additional certificate of excellence.

This year’s winners for the girls were, age 10, Brittany Penland (Southwick); age 11, Maya Daley (Southwick); age 12, Kaleigh Farris (Westfield) and for age 13, Hannah Baker (Southwick). There was no age 14 competitor for the girls division this year at the local level.

For the boys the winners were age 10, Kyle Grabowski (Westfield); age 11, Timothy McGrath (Southwick); age 12, Matt Daley (Southwick); age 13, Christopher Kibby (Southwick) and for age 14, Christopher White (Southwick).

Father Shea Council would like to congratulate each of the winners on their success and sportsmanship at the local level. We likewise wish all of the competitors continued success at the district level.
