WESTFIELD – The two-time defending Division I boys’ basketball runners-up are facing a bit of adversity for the first time in many years.

With Westfield unable to call upon backcourt mates Alex Garstka (1,000-plus points) and Jordan Santiago this season, the Bombers are still waiting for some playmakers to rise to the surface.

Amherst crashed the Whip City last night, flooring the Bombers 50-43 to improve to 4-1 in the Suburban League. Westfield fell to 6-7 overall, and are seated at .500 in the league.

It was an uphill battle all night as Amherst led 18-4 after one quarter, and 27-15 at the half.

“We’re just not making shots,” Westfield coach Bill Daley said. “We have got to get out of this funk and get four more (wins).”

Teams qualify for the tournament by finishing first or second in their respective leagues, or winning at least half of all their regular season games.

Westfield travels to Sci-Tech to take on the Cybercats on Friday before returning for their final homestand – against Malden Catholic (Feb. 11), East Longmeadow (Feb. 13), and Longmeadow (Feb. 16). The Bombers wrap up their regular season with games at Northampton (Feb. 20) and at Amherst (Feb. 22).

BOMBERS STORM LAKE PLACID: The Westfield High School hockey team enjoyed a successful trip to Lake Placid this past weekend.

Westfield (10-3) stormed back from a 1-0 deficit against Lake Placid for a 4-1 win in the tournament championship. The Bombers also defeated Shaker Coloniel 3-0 behind two goals from Nick Sibilia.
