WESTFIELD—Runners—and walkers—get ready. The fifth annual Run Westfield 5K is just two weeks away.
The annual charitable run takes place May 20, and registration for the event is still open. People can choose to run or walk, or they can opt to enjoy in the downtown festivities, as portions of Elm Street will be shut down before and after the race, allowing for revelers and others to walk around downtown and enjoy food, drinks and activities. Entries currently cost $40, with $5 of every entry going to local charities of runners’ choosing and complimentary t-shirts given to participants.
“It’s more than just a race, it’s a community event,” Mike Tierney, race organizer, said. “The race is just one component.”
The race will begin at 1 p.m. at Westfield State University, and will follow a course down Western Avenue and Court Street toward the library. From there, it takes its only turn—a left up Elm Street to the finish line near Church Street Commons.
Runners and walkers who finish will be welcomed by a festive atmosphere said Tierney, as the downtown area will be open by 11 a.m. and until 6 p.m. for the 5K Kooldown. Also along the way, various sponsors will be set up, and a fitness exposition will also be happening at the Woodward Center at WSU, from noon to 8 p.m.
Currently, around 38 teams and about 1,000 total participants are signed up for the race. For more information, visit runwestfield.com, which includes how to sign up and how to donate to participating charities.
