Bombers douse Cards

SPRINGFIELD – The Westfield High School boys’ lacrosse team, much like the U.S. Postal Service, works come rain or shine.
Westfield worked through cool temps and pouring rain Friday – and boy, did they ever deliver.

Backed by monster efforts from Max Maggipinto (6 goals, 1 assist) and Zach Gentle (4 goals, 1 assist), Westfield doused Pope Francis 16-5 at American International College. The Bombers led 4-0 after one quarter, and outscored the Cardinals 11-3 during the middle two frames to pull away.
Westfield’s Landon Reyes recorded a hat trick; Matt Bonsall had two assists; Chris Ward, Nicholas Clausen, and Devlin Welch scored one goal apiece; and, Kohl Lunardini and Ryan Metcalf each had one assist.
Westfield goalie Alex Beauchemin finished with 14 saves.
Mitch Weiss, Gavin Carzello, Zach Cree, and Tyler Shrewsbury in bottling up the Pope Francis offense, and distributing the ball to the midfielders and forwards.

Thriller … heartbreaker
Needham def. Westfield 22-25, 25-18, 25-14, 24-26, 15-13

Needham dealt Westfield its first loss of the season in a five-set thriller at Westfield High School.
Shane Kiendzior (13 kills, 4 blocks), Noah Kappel (14 kills, 6 blocks), Eddie Loboda (15 kills, 3 blocks), Scott Walsh (42 assists, 15 digs), and Tyler Stanton (28 digs, 3 assists) led the Bombers (11-1 overall, 7-0 North Division).
