Firefighters tend to the building on Notre Dame Street
WESTFIELD–A fire that started from an improperly disposed cigarette was quickly put out by Westfield Fire this afternoon.
Westfield Police and Fire Departments were called to a multi-family apartment at 53 Notre Dame St., after a resident on the second floor reportedly saw flames coming out from a wall behind a radiator. At least two residents were affected by the fire but officials were unable to state whether or not they were displaced initially. No injuries were reported and no pets were reported in the home.
“The fire was extinguished almost immediately upon our arrival,” Westfield Fire deputy chief Eric Bishop, said. “We were able to save the home before it extended far into the home.”
Bishop said that the building had moderate damage to it, with a majority of it to the exterior wall of the complex. However, he did note that there was also some interior damage to the apartments.
Bishop reported that there were smoke alarms inside the home but the fire began outside and the resident became aware of the fire before the alarms were activated. Bishop said that a poorly discarded cigarette was the possible cause of the fire, but it remains under investigation.
