Firefighter appointed

KYLE G. MILTIMORE

WESTFIELD – The city’s fire commission interviewed two candidates for a paramedic position at the Westfield Fire Department during a recent meeting and, after a brief executive session to discuss the applicants, appointed Kyle G. Miltimore of Westfield, to the department.
In his interview, Miltimore said that he was born in West Springfield and moved to the city in 2008 where he continues to live with is wife and three children.
He said that he would like to work for the department because his family lives here and he believes he can help “maintain the integrity of this community.”
“I would love to just give back to the community here where my family’s living,” he said.
Miltimore told the commissioners that he has “a strong passion for helping people” and is a very energetic team player who keeps a positive attitude, works well under stress and tries every day to learn something new.
In response to questions, he said that he continually strives to improve his skills so that he can help “increase the community’s wellness.”
He said that while working on an ambulance a paramedic should provide quality care to “make sure that the patient is always happy, that they wouldn’t be afraid to call 911 again if there’s ever an emergency.”
He said that he finds it “extremely rewarding” to help somebody in an emergency situation and “make their day a lot better.
Miltimore said that he currently works for American Medical Response, a private ambulance service, as a paramedic and also works part-time for the Southampton Fire Service as a firefighter working as an intermediate on the ambulance there.
The unsuccessful candidate for the position was Mathew Orzechoski, a Manchester, N.H., native currently living in Boston.
He told the commission that he would be happy to re-locate to the city and said “it’s very important to live in the community that you work in” as it “increases the bond between yourself and the rest of the community.”
He said that the city is very similar to Manchester where he grew up and said “it’s an excellent place to start and raise a family.” He also said that, if hired, he would like to “stay here until I retire.”
He said that he is “very much a team player.”
“I have no problem either taking on a leadership role or a back up role” depending on what is called for in any situation.
Orzechowski said that he currently works in two roles for Boston’s emergency medical service, both as a basic EMT and as an emergency medical dispatcher.
He said that as a dispatcher for a high volume medical response center he has dealt with large-scale incidents in hectic and stressful situations.
Although Orzechowski was not selected for the current position, the commission chairman, Albert Masciadrelli, when thanking him for his application, told him “Please keep us in mind because there is, in the very near future, going to be another opening. I will say you’ve got yourself very well positioned on the list. Thank you again.”
