Fishing derby surprised by spring-like temps

WESTFIELD (WWLP) – When organizers scheduled their annual fishing derby, they never counted on Saturdays spring-like temperatures.
The weather obviously kept attendance down on Russell pond for the 4th annual “Holey Moses Ice Fishing Derby”.
Fisherman John Decker approached the pond very cautiously.
“I’m really surprised actually,” he said. “I woke up, we grabbed our fishing poles and wanted to go fishing. We didn’t think the lake would still be frozen.”
All the proceeds from the derby go towards the Horace A. Moses Boy Scout camp in Russell.
The arctic conditions of a week ago provided enough frost to keep Russell Pond safe for the ice fishermen to spend their day catching fish for a good cause.
