WESTFIELD – Fred A. Sico, Sr., 96, passed away peacefully at home on September 2, 2022, with family at his side. He was born on March 13, 1926, to Sam and Nevicella (DiTrolio) Sico. He was one of six brothers and grew up on Church St. in Westfield, went to the Westfield Public Schools and graduated from the high school in 1944. He then was in the navy for two years. After that he attended Farragut College in Idaho, U Mass at Fort Devins and finally the University of Toledo in Ohio where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. He later earned a Master’s Degree in Education at Springfield College. His teaching career took him to Michigan, West Hartford, CT and to the Westfield Public Schools where he taught for 30 years. He retired in 1989 as a Physical Education teacher and supervisor of Health Safety and Physical Education for K-12. He married Helen Zawada, who was the love of his life, in 1952 and they had seven children that they raised in Westfield. Besides his family, friends and teaching, he enjoyed gardening, woodworking, golfing, watching westerns and lastly, family 4th of July gatherings and traveling, especially to Italy where he visited 30 times after his retirement, the last one returning on his 90th birthday! And he loved to dance with Helen!
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Helen (Zawada) Sico, son Michael Sico, his brothers, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and their spouses, and some nieces and nephews.
He leaves his daughter Mary Anne Sico DiSanto and her husband Jonathan, his sons Gerry, Tommy and Paul of Westfield, Danny and his wife Christine of Huntington, MA, Freddie Jr. and his wife Michelle of Cape Neddick, ME, his daughter in-law Joanne Sico and Deborah Sico of Westfield. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren Kyla Lamoure, Kaitlin (Sico) Karetka and her husband Tim, Michael Sico and his wife Jessica, Laura (Sico) McCarthy and her husband Brendan, Nicholas, Benjamin and his fiancée Sara, and Jonathan DiSanto, Christopher and Erica Sico and Desi Sico. He also leaves 6 great-grandchildren, Talulah, Leona, Andrew, Evan, Ryanne, and Henry. We will all miss him dearly as will his many nieces, nephews, other relatives and numerous friends. His smile, quick wit and sense of humor will never be forgotten.
The funeral for Fred will be on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at 9AM in Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield, MA followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in St. Mary’s Church, Westfield. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-7PM in Firtion-Adams Funeral Service.
