Genevieve E. Schenna

Montgomery – Genevieve E. Schenna, 94, (1925 -2019) died peacefully on October 23, 2019 at the Governor’s Center in Westfield, MA. She was one of three daughters born to Grace (Kelso) Sherwood and Joseph M. Sherwood. She was born at home in the village of Chester Hill on February 13, 1925. Genevieve was predeceased by George A. Schenna, her husband of 55 years, who was a decorated World War II Veteran.

She and her husband moved to Montgomery in 1959 and were active in this small community. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially birdwatching and will be greatly missed by her many friends in the hilltowns.

During her teen years, Genevieve lived in Springfield where she attended American International College. She received her master’s degree in teaching from Westfield State College. She taught second grade at the Russell Elementary School for many years.

She leaves a cousin, Harriet Gilman. She was predeceased by her sister, Esther Berger and a nephew, Martin Berger.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Chester, 334 Skyline Trail, Chester MA followed by burial in Center Cemetery in Montgomery. There will be a luncheon served at the Montgomery Town Hall at 1:00 p.m. in Genevieve’s memory. There are no calling hours. Donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, 334 Skyline Trail, Chester, MA 01011. O’Brien Hilltown Funeral Home in Huntington is in charge of the arrangements.
