Gertrude Y. Atteridge

SOUTHWICK – Gertrude Y. Atteridge Gertrude “Trudy” Yvonne (Edmonds) Atteridge, 91, (1926 – 2018) a longtime resident of Southwick, died on March 28, 2018 at Governor’s Center in Westfield. She was born in Providence, RI a daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Miller) Edmonds and was a 1944 graduate of Samuel Ward High School in Westerly, RI. She went on to further her education graduating in 1948 from Newport Hospital School of Nursing in Newport, RI. Trudy was a Naval Hospital Cadet Nurse before moving to New York in 1949, where she worked as a Registered Nurse and Director of Nursing at area hospitals.  Moving to Massachusetts in 1976, she worked for several Nursing Homes and retired in 2001 from Barnard Rest Home in Westfield.  Trudy was a communicant and Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Southwick. She volunteered for meals on wheels and in her early days, was a singer in the Sweet Adaline, Barber Shop Quartet.  In addition to her parents, Trudy was predeceased by her best friend and husband of 65 years, William “Bill” Atteridge; and her daughter-in-law, Cathy Atteridge.  She leaves 3 sons, William J. Atteridge, Jr. and his wife Vivien of Cheshire, England, Stephen M. Atteridge and his wife Connie of Mebane, NC, and Brian J. Atteridge of Mahwah, NJ; 2 daughters, Edwina C. Califano and her husband Arthur of West Greenwich, RI and Mary Ann Mortati of Southwick; 1 sister, Margaret Harding of Bowie, MD; 12 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren. Trudy’s funeral will be held on Thursday, April 5th at 8:30 a.m. from the Southwick Forastiere Funeral Home, 624 College Highway, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Church, Sheep Pasture Road, both in Southwick, with Rites of Committal at 11:00 a.m. at the Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday evening, March 4th from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
