Golf coach honored at school committee meeting

SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Regional High School boy’s golf coach, Al Selden, was honored during Tuesday night’s school committee meeting. Superintendent Jen Willard recognized Selden with the You Make a Difference Award.

Explaining that she had created this event once she became the Superintendent, Willard has given this award out to other school officials this year.

Finishing his seventh season as the boys golf coach this past fall, Selden was named the MIAA Coach of the Year for boys golf. Along with Turners Falls softball coach Gary Mullins, Selden helped represent the Western Massachusetts coaches as there were 20 other recipients for the award. Selden will be honored for the award at the MIAA Awards Recognition Banquet on May 25 at the Doubletree Hotel in Milford, Massachusetts.

Selden was able to become a recipient of the award because of his team.

“It was pretty exciting,” said Selden. “The team nominated me, which is humbling in itself.”

Selden led the Rams to a 16-2 record this fall earning second place at the Western Massachusetts Division II Championship. The Rams then proceeded to finish in 11th place in the state championships, which was the best result among all Western Mass teams.
