SOUTHWICK – A structure fire that occurred at a home in Southwick Tuesday night has resulted in a total loss of the home.

The fire occurred at around 6:08 p.m. on Tuesday night at 80 Fred Jackson Road. When Southwick firefighters responded to the scene, the fire was completely involved inside the home. According to the press release sent out by Southwick Fire Chief Russ Anderson, the homeowners reported a fire in the basement, and it began to spread to the first floor, as well as the attic.

The Southwick Fire Department was on scene fighting the fire, with additional assistance provided by departments from Granville, Agawam, Suffield, East Granby, East Hartland, Conn., Russell and Barnes Regional Airport.

Anderson said that the neighborhood where Fred Jackson Road is located has no hydrants. Therefore, emergency crews had to bring water from a mile away. Additional difficulties that firefighters had to deal with, according to the press release, included live electrical power lines.

One individual occupying the home received medical treatment for smoke inhalation but all of the occupants were able to escape from the fire. It was also confirmed that two pets were lost in the fire, in addition to the home being a total loss.

A previous report from The Westfield News’ media partner WWLP reported that the blaze is believed to have been started accidentally.
