Huntington elects two for Select Board; Town Clerk position tied

HUNTINGTON – The town election on Saturday, May 19, which had contested races for Board of Selectmen and Town Clerk, drew 296 voters and resulted in elections for the Board and a dead heat for Town Clerk.

Karon Hathaway earned a three-year seat on Board of Selectmen.

Darlene McVeigh won a two-year seat on the Board of Selectmen.

Elected for a three-year term on the Board of Selectman was Capital Planning Committee member Karon Hathaway, who defeated fireman Dylan Mosher 229 to 50. Elected for a two-year term was Finance Committee chair Darlene McVeigh, who had 183 votes to business owner and Planning Board member Evelyn Korfias’ 99.

Kathleen Thomas

Judith Guyette

In the Town Clerk election, Kathleen Thomas, who is serving as Interim Town Clerk until June 30 and previously served as Assistant Town Clerk for the past seven years, received 139 votes. Judith Guyette, who previously served as Town Clerk from 1983 to 2003 and currently is chair of the Alphonso P. Pettis Fund, also received 139 votes. Board of Health member Melissa Reid, the third candidate, received 10 votes. The tie was unprecedented, according to Thomas. A recount has been scheduled, and if not resolved, a new election will be held.

Also elected were Jean Jackman for a three-year term on the Board of Health, Charles Dazelle for a three-year term on the Water/Sewer Commission, Walt Wittshirk for Tree warden, George Peterson for a three-year term as Councilor on the Hampshire Council of Governments and one-year as Town Moderator, Judith Guyette for three years as Trustee of the Pettis Fund, and Jeffrey Jorritsma for three years as Constable.

Several positions on the ballot were blank and drew write-in candidates, one of which also resulted in a tie. Eric Steins and Laurie Wickland tied (5-5) as write-ins for a three-year term on the Board of Assessors. Winning write-in candidates included John McVeigh for the Gateway Regional School Committee (three years), Alex Roseweir for Water/Sewer Commission (one year), William Millin for Pettis Fund (two years), Sue Fopiano for Trustee for Whiting Street (one and three years) and Deborah Wyand as Library Trustee (three years).

Write-in candidates must accept their positions. The Town Clerk is currently making the calls for acceptances.
