AMHERST – The Westfield High School boys’ soccer team’s road trip to Amherst was a bit rocky, as the Hurricanes blew the Bombers off course, 6-2.
Alex LaRaja and Eric Gooden scored two goals apiece to lead Amherst. Eric Shilyuk scored twice for Westfield.
Gooden tallied a goal less than a minute into the game, but Westfield responded with Shilyuk’s goal about two minutes later. Mike Santinello assisted on the play.
Westfield and Amherst remained deadlocked at 1-all until Wilson Fidalgo scored in the final minute of the half.
Amherst ratcheted up the pressure in the second half, netting two goals within about a 10-minute spin midway through the half. Gabe Fontes scored in the 52nd minute and Gooden made it 4-1 with about just over 18 minutes remaining.
Westfield worked hard to trim the lead. Shilyuk took a pass from Chris Unger and struck the back of the net with just over 9 minutes left.
LaRaja added two insurance goals late.
