I was wondering if you know why there are security cameras on top of the traffic light? If you can show why please do. From,a student at Highland elementary. The Westfield News reached out to both the Westfield Police Dept and Engineering Dept and the folks in Engineering informed us that the cameras seen at some intersections are the modern mechanism for triggering a change in the signal light. Where, historically, there would be a vehicle detector embedded in the asphalt to trigger a change in the light, this is now all done by “electronic eye.” The modern mechanism also works for bicyclists if they are at a light and in the properly marked bicycle lane.
