Isabelle Mills

WESTFIELD- Isabelle E. (Cundy) Mills, 96, of Westfield passed away on May 9, 2015. She was born in Melrose on November 21, 1918, the daughter of the late Baylus and Margaret (Buckley) Cundy and was educated at the Chandler School in Boston and at Stephen F. Austin College in Texas. Isabelle was a W.W. II veteran serving in the Women’s Army Corps. She was predeceased by her husband Frank G. Mills, M.D. F.A.C.S., a U.S. Navy destroyer veteran of W.W. II in 1983. In life, she was indefatigable in all her endeavors, be it serving her country at Walter Reed Army Medical Center or getting her “P.H.D.” (putting husband thru Doctorate) when her love Frank was a student, intern and resident in surgical training. In addition to raising a family of five, running a physician’s office and managing the home. She obtained her Solo License to fly while her husband gained his instrument and multi engine ratings and became a Q.B.(Quiet Birdmen). Serving on the Westfield Arts Council, she helped start and run WestFest at Stanley Park for many years. Isabelle was a member of American Legion Post 454 and an athenaeum corporator and docent. Mother planned and navigated a X Country national park camping trip like a modern day Sacajawea with our “tribe”. Her last major family expedition was in 2000 for a reunion “Down Under” in Australia. A 45+ year survivor of radical cancer surgeries and treatments, she laughingly referred to herself as “one tough old Battle Ax”. An expert multi tasker and devoted wife, she never put herself first in life. A loving mother of high expectations…or else. Surely this helps explain her lust for life and family by breaking into song with “God Bless America” while being given Last Rites. She will be missed. Isabelle is survived by her children, Frank G. Mills II of Westfield, Janet S. Nicholson and her husband Vince of Sydney, Australia, Bruce F. Mills and his wife Tamar of Florence, Carol A. Sikora of Amherst and Nancy L. Mills of Canberra, Australia. She also leaves her loving grandchildren, Constance, Christian, Kathleen and Allison and many great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Margaret Dingle and Bud Cundy and lastly her poodles Babbette and Quigley. A Memorial Service will be held at the Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad St., Westfield on Thursday at 12 Noon. Burial with her husband, Frank G. Mills, M.D. will follow at MA Memorial Veterans’ Cemetery, 1390 Main St., Agawam, MA at 1 PM. A calling hour will precede the service from 11-12 at the funeral home.
