At-Large Council Candidate

Name: James R. Adams

Address: 985 Granville Road

Occupation: V.P. Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, Inc.

What experience and qualifications do you have that would be an asset to the city?

Served for 10 years as at large candidate. My assets to the city are knowing how the city runs and all the departments involved. Also owning a business in town I understand the wants and needs of the business community.

Have you recently met with city department heads to discuss their needs/concerns/budgets and if so, which ones?

I have spoken to many dept. heads over the past year. I know the new Police and Fire Chief and I know they are hoping for the acceptance of new contracts. I have watched the water issues in town and agree with the decisions Dave Billips, the mayor and council have made. I speak with many dept. heads on a regular basis.

If you could change how the Council works, what would be your priority?

I like the way the council worked the first few years I served. All the debating was done in sub- committee meetings not on the council floor. The past few years the meetings have gone way too long and very little accomplished. Many councilors have their own agenda and want to express it during live t.v. when it should be discussed during sub-committee.

Why should residents vote for you?

  1. The school system — we need to address issues to get our school buildings and education to the top in the state.
  2. Prioritize spending — don’t spend money foolishly, our taxes are where they need to be. We need to try whatever we can not to raise them.
  3. We need to find ways to generate income without taxing residents.

What prompted you to see an At-Large City Council seat?

I think I give residents a candidate that can work with anyone to address issues. I have always supported police, fire and education. I also own a business in town and understand the side of the business owners. My 10 years of experience is something I think the city needs today.

I think it is good to step away from politics for a period of time. I have done this twice before. I still think I can help the city move forward. I have followed our issues in town over the past four years and don’t like the direction the council is going. I am able to free up some of my time since my son has joined my family business.
