Bombers top Lancers, 51-44

Westfield boys’ hoops improves to 2-0 in Suburban League

LONGMEADOW – The Westfield High School boys’ basketball team may have had a roller coaster start through the first half of the season, but the Bombers are off and running on the right foot in league play.

Westfield defeated Longmeadow on the road Monday 51-44 to improve to 6-5 overall, 2-0 Suburban League. The Lancers fell to 7-9, 1-3.

Justin Crosby (16 points) and Joe Meade (15) led the Westfield offense.

“We’re a work in progress on offense – that’s for sure,” Westfield coach Bill Daley said. “But we’re starting to understand the importance of the little things. …We understanding what we do best.”

Westfield excelled on the defensive side of the ball. Crosby and Matt Krutka shut down two of Longmeadow’s sparkplugs. The two Bombers limited Brendan Abad and John Basille to just 13 combined points. Those two Lancers combined for 47 and 43 in two games against the Whip City last season.

Westfield led at the half 25-17 Monday night, but fell behind 30-28 in the third quarter. The Bombers turned it up a notch defensively in the fourth quarter, holding the Lancers to just seven points and pulling away.

Devin Wells finished with seven points for Westfield. Krutka had 6; Billy Smith, 5; and, Connor Sas, 2.

Westfield next hosts Northampton on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Holyoke Catholic 44, Southwick-Tolland 42

Tommy Mahoney led Southwick with 17 points, and Mark O’Neill had 11.

LATE RESULTS

St. Mary’s 1, Chicopee Comp 0

Trey Tremblay scored the game-winner with an assist from Jeff Turini and Sean Bienvenue to improve to 7-4-2 late Friday night. Saints’ goalie Zach Brown shut out the Colts with 18 saves.

St. Mary’s killed off five power play opportunities.
