John A. Morrissey

WESTFIELD – flagJohn A. “Jiggs” Morrissey, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, July 9, 2016. He was born November 5, 1931 to the late William and Eva (Stevenson) Morrissey. Jiggs was a graduate of Westfield High School, Northfield Mt Hermon and received his Master’s Degree in Education from Westfield State College. He was employed for 34 years by the Agawam School System, starting as a history teacher in the Middle School, then becoming Asst. Principal in Agawam High School, retiring as Principal of Agawam High School. John served his country with the United States Air Force from 1952-1956 during Korea, and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a longtime communicant, lector and choir member of Holy Trinity Church in Westfield, a member of the Holy Trinity Golf League, lifetime member of the MIAA, member of the Slovak Hall Cribbage League and a Past Commander of the American Legion Post 124 in Westfield.

Jiggs is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Bernice T. (Zawada) Morrissey of Westfield, his seven loving children and (17 cherished grandchildren), Kathleen E. Irr and her husband Frank of Norwich, CT (Michael and Christopher), Donna M. O’Connor and her husband Jim of Westfield (Chelsey and Matthew), Teresa A. Oleksak and her husband Steve of Westfield (Stephen and John), Joanne Viets and her husband Scott of Troy, OH (Kristina and Jeremy), Patricia E. MacCauley and her husband Jerry of Chesapeake, VA (Jordan, Abby and Olivia), John A. Morrissey and his wife Mary of Westfield (Brendan and Catherine) and Mary L. Loughrey and her husband Doug of Holyoke (Grace, Martin, Jack and Timothy), and his sister Maureen Oleksak of Westfield. He was predeceased by his brother, William Morrissey. His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9AM from the Firtion Adams FS, 76 Broad St. Westfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10AM in Holy Trinity Church, Elm St. Westfield. Burial with Military Honors will be held at a later date in The Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Agawam. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-7 PM in the funeral home.
