John T. Tully

GREAT BARRINGTON:  flagJohn T. Tully, age 96, of Great Barrington died April 1 at the Soldiers’ Home of Holyoke. Born in Great Barrington February 21, 1920 son of Richard and Annie Sweeney Tully, he graduated from the former Searles High School.

An Army Staff Sargeant veteran of WWII he served from 1942 to 1946 in the Asiatic Pacific in the 1011 Engineer Treadway Bridge Co.

He was a building contractor for many years, but best known as the former Superintendent of the Great Barrington Fairground.

Mr. Tully was a communicant of St. Peter’s church and an Honorary Life Member of the Council #513 Mount Everett Council Knights of Columbus and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed golf, gardening, playing bridge, and reading. He was a daily visitor to the Mason Library.

His wife, the former Gemma V. Berti, predeceased him in 2009, also predeceased by one brother, Richard and two sisters Ann Walsh and Kathleen Congdon. He leaves a daughter, Deborah A. Tully of Westfield, two sisters, Mary Lucey and Ruth Wilcoxson as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for John T. Tully will be held on Tuesday April 5th at 10:00 AM with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Saint Peter’s Church with Reverend William P. Murphy Pastor officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Saint Peter’s Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Monday April 4th from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street Great Barrington MA 01230. In lieu of flowers John would like donations to go to the St. Peter’s Restoration Fund or to the Soldiers’ Home of Holyoke Recreation Fund in care of the funeral home.
