Emergency Response and Crime Report
WESTFIELD
Friday, June 15, 2012
2:26 p.m.: fraud, Kelly Drive, a caller reports she may have been victimized by a door-to-door magazine subscription sales person, the responding officer reports the caller said that she wrote a $60 check to fund a magazine subscription for a random member of the military and is now having second thoughts after learning of a scam involving magazine subscriptions;
2:30 p.m.: suspicious activity, Cherry Street supervisory officer reports he was advised of live ammunition offered for sale at a tag sale, the officer reports two .50 caliber rounds were confiscated;
6:35 p.m.: fire, Munger Hill Road, a caller reports that a grill fire next to a house is out-of-control, dual response dispatched, the responding firefighters report the fire was extinguished upon their arrival and the building was checked for hot spots, the firefighters report a plastic hose melted and the escaping gas which was directed toward the house ignited, the vinyl siding near the grill was damaged;
10:11 p.m.: noise complaint, St. Paul Street, a caller reports loud music and a banging noise coming from a neighbor’s residence, the responding officer reports he heard the music upon his arrival and the caller said the noise has been an ongoing problem all day, the officer spoke with the neighbor who opined that he could play his music at whatever volume he wanted until 11 p.m., the officer advised the man that he may not make noise that disturbs the peace of his neighbors at any hour, the man said that he was working on his deck and the officer advised him to find a less problematic hour to do home improvements, the man went inside to lower the volume of the music and the officer heard him banging on a common wall as he went up the stairs and subsequently advised the man that any additional noise would result in his arrest, the officer spoke with the caller and again heard the man banging, Miguel A. Fernandez Jr., 47, of 2 St. Paul St., was arrested for disturbing the peace;
10:56 p.m.: disturbance, Powder Mil Village, 126 Union Street, a caller reports that she was jumped by her boyfriend, the responding officer reports the caller said that an argument developed with her boyfriend and the man grabbed her hair and arm and threw her to the ground, the officer noted red marks and minor swelling on the woman’s arm, the man was not found, a criminal complaint was filed;

12:05 a.m.: suspicious vehicle, Mainline Drive, a patrol officer reports he observed a car parked on the side of the road and approached to see that the windows were fogged, the officer reports that he found the occupants in the back seat expressing loving feelings, the couple was advised to leave the area;
9:28 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Lindbergh Boulevard at East Silver Street, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop, the vehicle’s registration was found to be expired and it was towed to the police impound yard;
10:51 a.m.: disturbance, East Silver Street, caller reports a domestic disturbance and that the male party keeps a machete in the apartment, the responding officer reports the disturbance was entirely verbal, the machete was surrendered to police for safe keeping;
3:13 p.m.: assist other police department, Hampton Ponds, a caller reports a drowning at the ponds, dual response dispatched, the responding officer reports that the state police dive team, air wing and other assets are at the pond searching, a detective was dispatched and assisted with search until it was suspended due to darkness, the detective reports that the incident occurred in Southampton and the investigation will be conducted by the Hampshire County District Attorney’s office, see story in Monday’s edition of The Westfield News;
4:45 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Springfield Road, a patrol officer reports he observed a vehicle operating on Springfield Road with an expired inspection sticker, the vehicle was stopped and the officer reports a routine check revealed that the operator’s license had been suspended, Christian M. Burton-Hill, 27, of 40 Rittenhouse Terrace, Springfield, was arrested for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license (a subsequent event) and for operating a motor vehicle without a valid inspection sticker;
5:22 p.m.: missing person, Franklin Street, a patrol officer reports he observed a girl walking on Franklin Street who appeared to be a girl who had been reported to be missing, the officer reports he spoke with the girl who was slow to answer when asked for her name and date of birth and appeared to be looking for an escape route, the officer took custody of the girl who struggled to escape him and struck his eye, the juvenile Feeding Hills resident was arrested for being delinquent by reason of assault and battery on a police officer;
6:02 p.m.: animal complaint, Sunrise Terrace, a caller reports he has taken custody of a stray dog, the responding animal control officer reports the Jack Russell terrier dog was transported to the Westfield Animal Shelter;
6:04 p.m.: disturbance, North Elm Street, a caller reports a domestic disturbance, the responding community policing officer reports the disturbance was entirely verbal but a routine check of persons present revealed that one was the subject of an outstanding warrant, Heather Laggassey 34, of 165 Crest Lane, Granville, was arrested on the warrant;
6:46 p.m.: breaking and entering, Montgomery Road, caller reps the house she is rehabilitating was broken into and the copper piping was stolen, the responding officer reports the caller said that recently purchased property was secure on Sunday, June 10, but when she went to the house the following Saturday she found the basement hatch open and the basement flooded, further investigation revealed that the cast iron radiators, the sinks and faucets and the copper piping in the house had been stolen, entry was apparently made via a rear window or door;
9:50 p.m.: breaking and entering, Prospect Street, a caller reports his home was broken into and property is missing, the responding officer reports that the caller said that he left home shortly before 6 a.m. and about 6 p.m. a neighbor called to advise him that a door was open, the caller said that when he returned he found about $1,000 in cash had been stolen from two locations in his home;
10:59 p.m.: suspicious activity, Sadie Knox Playground, 32 Prospect Street, a caller reports youths in Sadie Knox Playground are smashing things, the respond officer reports he observed youths at a picnic table and one attempted to hide a beer as he approached, the young man was found to be 19-years-old, Jose Vasquez, 19, of 126 Union St., was arrested for being a person younger than the legal drinking age in possession of liquor;
11:56 p.m.: vandalism, Main Street at Clinton Avenue, a caller reports two teenaged boys vandalized flowers in front of the church and yelled profanities at her when she objected, the responding officer reports he found and identified two teens in the area and contacted their parents to take custody of them, the boys were surrendered to parents and one of the boys’ mothers said that she would have her son go to the church in the morning to replant the flowers even though she does not believe her son had been involved in the vandalism.
