Transfer station stickers start Monday

Stickers are now on sale at the Health Department office in City Hall which will be required to dispose of material at the Twiss Street transfer station starting on Monday, July 2.

WESTFIELD – The city’s Board of Health approved a sticker program in April to prevent use of the Twiss Street transfer station by non-residents and Michael Suckau, the city’s director of public health, points out that the program will take effect on Monday, July 2.
Residents who use the transfer station will be required to display a sticker on the back side of their vehicle’s rear view mirror when they bring material to the Twiss Street facility for disposal.
The stickers are available at the Health Department’s office in City Hall at a cost of $10 per sticker. Resident who use more than one vehicle to transport waste material to the transfer station will be obliged to purchase separate stickers for each vehicle used. There is no discount for additional stickers as the permits apply to the vehicle, not the owner.
The transfer station stickers will not relieve residents of the obligation to secure disposal stickers for certain classes of items to be disposed of.
Appliances which contain Freon, such as refrigerators and air conditioners, will require a special sticker at a cost of $10 per item.
Electronic items such as televisions and computer monitors will need special stickers too and the cost of stickers for those devices will vary according to the size of the monitor
Screens of less than 19 inches will cost $5 to dispose of while stickers for devices with screens between 19 inches and 35 inches will cost $10. Televisions larger than 35 inches will cost $25 to dump.
A sticker to authorize disposal of a propane tank will cost $5.
No tractor-trailer tires may be discarded at the transfer station but regular vehicle tires are allowed at a cost of $3 for tires with rims and $2 for unmounted tires.
Mattresses, box springs and furniture which includes upholstery will require $10 stickers.
No stickers will be sold at the transfer station but the stickers for special items are sold at the city’s Big Y grocery stores in addition to the Health Department office in City Hall.
The newly required general purpose stickers will be available only at City Hall.
Items may be brought to the transfer station on weekdays, from 7 a.m. until 2:45 p.m., and on Saturdays between 7-11:45 a.m.
During the winter weekends (December – April) the transfer station will be open only on the first Saturday of each month between 7-11:45 a.m.
