KATHLEEN KNAPIK

Candidate for Trustee of the Westfield Athenaeum

Name: Kathleen Knapik

Address: 45 East Silver Street

Occupation: Teacher, Westfield Public Schools

Experience / Qualifications:

I am a professional educator, a parent, and a life-long learner who would bring a unique perspective and energy to the Westfield Athenaeum Board of Directors.

I am presently serving as a teacher in the Westfield Public Schools, and I previously worked as a college administrator in academic and student affairs. My background includes a B.A.in English from Holy Cross College, an M.A.in Communications from Fairfield University, and an M.Ed. in Elementary Education from Westfield State University.

Perspective on the Westfield Athenaeum:

The Westfield Athenaeum has been a tremendous asset in our community for 155 years. Back in 1864, a group of business leaders came together to incorporate a free library for all citizens.  In choosing to call it an “Athenaeum,” these philanthropists determined that this library would be more than just a collection of books.  They determined that this would be a gathering place where all citizens could explore the arts and the sciences, exchange ideas, and meet as engaged members of their community.

The Athenaeum founders would certainly be proud of the staff and volunteers who have carried this vision forward over the years. The Athenaeum continues to stand majestically in the city center, and it is now home to extensive collections of print and technology resources, as well as an art gallery; a history museum; a busy calendar of speakers, performances, and activities; and various spaces for community events and meetings.

Today, the Athenaeum continues to evolve. Staff, volunteers, and donors are building for the future with an ambitious fundraising campaign and extensive projects focusing on facility renovations, upgraded technology, and improved accessibility.

Goals as an Athenaeum Trustee:

My primary goal will be to support the Athenaeum’s most valuable resources:  the dedicated staff, the committed volunteers, and the generous donors.

I will also jump right in to work on the ongoing renovation projects and fundraising efforts, including the Athenaeum’s upcoming wine tasting event (Friday evening, Dec.r 6).

In addition, I will work to expand collaboration between the Athenaeum and the Westfield Public Schools.  In a time of growing needs and limited finances, we should create strategies to maximize opportunities to serve our city’s children.

I respectfully ask for your vote for the position of Trustee, and I thank you for your continued support of the Westfield Athenaeum.
