LONGMEADOW – The Westfield High School girls’ volleyball gave its best effort, but the competition was fierce. Longmeadow won a hard-fought, well-played match, defeating the visiting Bombers, 25-19, 25-12, 25-21 yesterday.
Maddy Atkocaitis played a nice solid all-around game, contributing seven service points, two aces, and four kills for Westfield. Bombers’ Abby Hart (5 kills, 2 aces) Tracy Midwood had 16 assists.
GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY
Gateway 11, St. Mary’s 31
Gateway swept the top three spots with Katie Clark (23:43), Ashley Yost (23:48), and Ariel Baillargeon (24:32) leading the way.
St. Mary’s Abbie Rix slid into the number four slot with a finishing time of 26:47.
BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY
Gateway 18, St. Mary’s 51
Joe Orlowski (19:26) and Chris Hanchak (19:47) placed first and second overall to lead Gateway.
St. Mary’s Matt Benoit finished in 20:01 to take the number three spot.
“We have a tiny team,” said Suzanna Dawyog, “but our runners are getting so good.”

Westfield 2, Cathedral 0
Haley scored in the 37th and 38th minute of the second half, the second on a pass from McKenzie Saltmarsh for Westfield. Bombers’ Amelia Tooker and Celina Nunez combined for the shutout in net. Nunez made a key save on a direct kick, by tipping it up and over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless early in the second half.

St. Mary 15.5, Monson 8.5
Zach L. Brown shot a match-low 38 for four points for St. Mary, Noah Parker finished with a 40 at the top spot (3.5 points), and Zach Brown and Corey Clemente each recorded a 42.
BOYS’ SOCCER
St. Mary 3, Pioneer Valley Christian School 1
Anthony Garde, Mike Tassinari, and Zack Slepchuk each scored a goal for St. Mary on a wet, slippery field, pulling away following a 1-1 tie at the half. Saints’ goalie Bryce Kibbe collected 15 saves.
Southwick 2, Frontier 0
Andrae Campbell scored unassisted, and John Devine netted a goal on a pass from Dillan Davignon to lead Southwick to the victory. Tim Reardon and Patrick King combined for six saves in net.
The Rams are now 4-2-3.
Westfield Voc-Tech 3, Pathfinder 0
Colin Fecteau had one goal and one assist to lead Voc-Tech. Tyler Hall and Peter Makarchuk scored one goal apiece for the Tigers. Mike Brut and Adam Gilbert earned assists as well.
JV BOYS’ SOCCER
Southwick 6, Frontier 0
Ryan Todesco had two goals and two assists to lead Southwick. Adam Lane, Declan O’Donnell, Brandon Smith, and Austin Leary scored one goal apiece. O’Donnell, Lane (2 assists), and Brett Giddis also had assists.
