Letter: Mayor encourages Flag Day standout

To the Editor

Sunday, June 14 is Flag Day.

I must confess, it kind of snuck up on me this year. The Covid 19 Pandemic occupied our attention almost exclusively.

I am writing to once again extend the invitation for your readers to grab their American flags and stand out with them on Sunday, June 14, 2020, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM.

We will gather, as usual, in the park on the South side between the two bridges over the Westfield River.

Every year Flag Day is observed to honor our flag and the nation it represents.

For many years as a State Representative and Senator I organized a pro-America, non-political, non-partisan, grassroots, pro-flag, patriotic standout on Flag Day in Westfield.  Now I am proud to serve as Mayor and I would like to continue that tradition.

This event is open to everyone: individuals or groups, children or adults.  I’d love to see scouts and veterans, candidates and politicians, citizens and lovers of freedom, free speech, and democracy, Americans of all colors and creeds come to celebrate Flag Day and show their pride in their flag and their country.

Even if you don’t live in Westfield, all are welcome!

If anyone has an old or tattered American flag they would like to retire in a respectful way, they can bring them to me that afternoon.  As usual, I will be collecting flags that are no longer serviceable and will be passing them on to a local veterans group for an appropriate retirement ceremony.

The standout will take place rain or shine.  Spread the word.  All are welcome. Since we will be outside masks are not required.
We will keep a safe distance from each other as we stand.

God Bless America!

Sincerely,

Mayor Don Humason
