Letter to the Editor: Hoose on bacon and the economy

To the Editor,

Hello Westfield, especially, Ward 3; Hi folks…OK, prepare for a shocker…Trump did the right thing by not authorizing an attack on Iran.  But, looming is the question of if we do attack; what will Iran’s most important ally, Russia, do?  For if there is an attack, you can figure Israel, and the Saudis will be involved.  Thus so too Iraq, Syria, maybe Lebanon and I am sure Turkey does not want to be left out.  Turkey had an election, where the voters of Istanbul voted against their near dictator. He would love an excuse to consolidate his power as he did with the coup attempt.

Speaking of consolidating power…Trump says he has the power to circumvent the Constitution and Congress to have a war with Iran.  And, can fire the head of the Fed, so as to control the American economy.  Along with government by (royal) executive privilege and order (edict)…wait…. OK, maybe having too many dictators as buddies, or just affluenza and corporatitis, but President is NOT KING!  Again, folks, please read Article 1 or OUR Constitution.

On a more local subject…While out shopping the other day, as usual, I chatted with other shoppers…one thing we all seemed to notice, of late, was a switcheroo on the sale of bacon…lower prices, BUT, instead of for a pound, it was for 12 ounces….I guess someone figures that we look at the price alone…?  No, we are not.  I usually check the products I buy for content and other things as weight.  So pay attention, and stay aware…  The tariff effect is coming home to you.

Oh, speaking of our wonderful economy….I was amused by an editorial cartoon that expresses my, you have to be kidding me, wonderful economy….While it has gone on for a while, have both spouses working to pay bills, and with one working 2 jobs…to pay the bills that used to be paid by only one working????   How is this a wonderful?  And, with cuts in Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, as well, private sector taxes going up: bank fees, interest rates, insurance costs, and medical expenses…not so great.

With this is that, we subsidize more billion dollar corps, or at cut their taxes to about nothing.  The biggest con job on us was Citizens United that made Corporations equal in status to people.  OK, if corporate, and us are equal why; why don’t we have the same Rights as corporates?  We go bankrupt it costs us a fortune, they pass it on to the tax payer, and consumers (that is us too).  Can we cut all of our expenses off our taxes…; NO.  Now, the plan to cut pharmaceuticals and surprise hospital billings by having them post their prices ahead of time…How does that lower them?  OK, you Kool Aid drinkers, you may want to take a little time and make a little effort regarding what you think is in your interests.

Your former Ward 3 City Councilor, Brian Hoose
