Letter to the Editor: Hoose talks youth and candidates

To the Editor,

Hi folks…In the News: Bullet Proof backpacks for our students???  In that it can happen here, and it can happen to us.  I guess it makes pathetic sense to do so.  Is that going to be enough to motivate us, the everyday Americans to get off our butts and start living up to our obligations?  Probably not, but I would like to think so.  And, now to borrow from President Reagan: here we go again; President Trump after the shooting last week; up and down about records checks, red line, NOW, we’ll no not really.  Is it no wonder so few can trust his words?  Our allies are always waiting from him to NOT do as he promises.  The only one of his anti-mass shooting is to round up the emotionally disturbed, and LOCK THEM UP.

To the youth of Westfield…you are not our next generation, you are this generation; as it seems that it is high school and younger students are the ones willing to put their actions where their words are.  Even elementary students are taking on issues of environment, safety, and just plain doing stuff to helping people.  And, on top of that using their acquired skills to create, invent, things; start up their own businesses.  And, while many of you are not old enough to vote yet, you can work elections to get others to vote; collect petition signatures.  I began at 12/13; if I could then, you surely can now.  And, with the popularity of being an Independent you do not have to get taken in by a Party.  Look at what, Greta, from Sweden, re: environment, and she is 16.  The students in Parkland, Florida who started a national March For Our Lives movement for gun responsibility.  Malala Yousafzai, has done in Pakistan after being shot for demanding education for girls.  There are student groups in Springfield.  Want something to do with a sense of purpose, and self-worth?  The opportunities are there.  What about students using a 3-D Printer to create devices that can help people with disabilities, as in Chicopee.  Think about it…please.  Americans are not flag wavers, we are the doers of deeds, and have always been that way.

Next, I was remiss…in mentioning some of my preferred candidate for this year’s election.  Our good friend Dan Moriarty, as a former reporter he does know Westfield.  As well, he is a good person, who I know I can trust.  For Ward 6, I do not know Mr. Neece, I’ll have to check into him.  BUT, I do know Bill Onyski, and he definitely works hard to represents the issues and concerns of Ward 6.  Your current School Committee has be doing an outstanding job.  Dealing with our current limits, and moving our educational system into the 21St Century.  For Mayor…Mike McCabe, if he can work the city as he has done with our police dept., he will do an excellent job as OUR mayor.  Ward 1; Mary Ann Babinski.  While we have our differences, you cannot say that is doesn’t rep. Ward 1.  With all the environmental issues allow, she stays on top of their issues and concerns.  Mike Burns has been doing a great job, for Ward 4; I see no reason to derail the progress, and hard work that he has done.  OK, enough for now, more next time.    I’ll do my best to get back to more local issues, next time….

Your former Ward 3 City Councilor, Brian Hoose, [email protected].
