Local Students Named to the Dean’s List at the University of New Haven
WEST HAVEN, CT – The following students were named to the Dean’s List at the University of New Haven for the spring 2013 semester. Full-time undergraduate students must have a 3.50 or better cumulative GPA for the semester to be eligible for the Dean’s List.

Lauren Grenier Named to Siena College Spring 2013 President’s List
LOUDONVILLE, NY – Lauren Grenier has been named to Siena College’s President’s List for the Spring 2013 Semester.
Grenier is a/an Psychology major from Southwick, MA. To be named to the President’s List, a student’s GPA for the semester must be 3.9 or higher. Grenier was one of approximately 264 students who were named to this semester’s list.
Local Resident Emma Ciborowski Named to Siena College Dean’s List for Spring 2013
LOUDONVILLE, NY – Emma Ciborowski has been named to Siena College’s Dean’s List for the Spring 2013 semester.
Ciborowski is a/an Biology major from Westfield, MA. To be named to the Dean’s List, a student’s grade point average for the semester must be between 3.5 and 3.89. Ciborowski was one of 747 students to be included on the list this semester.
Binghamton University student Heather M. Colburn from Westfield, MA receives Decker Foundation Award for Academic Excellence (BAT)

Colburn from Westfield, MA recently received a(n) Decker Foundation Award for Academic Excellence (BAT), an award presented to a graduating senior in the BAT program in recognition of academic excellence based on his or her GPA in all upper division nursing coursework.

Johnson Interned at Susquehanna Valley Prosthetics and Orthotics, Inc.
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Abigail Johnson, of Granville, Mass., served an internship at Susquehanna Valley Prosthetics and Orthotics, Inc. this spring. She is a rising junior majoring in neuroscience at Susquehanna University.
Johnson’s responsibilities included scheduling and filing in the front office, assisting in the laboratory and observing the practitioners with patients.
Johnson, a 2011 graduate of Northwest Catholic High School, is the daughter of Don Johnson and Martha Lilja-Johnson.
Hannah Placzek Named to Hartwick College Dean’s List
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick College sophmore Hannah Placzek, of Westfield, MA, daughter of Kathleen MacLean and Vincent Placzek, has been named to the spring term Dean’s List at Hartwick.
Inclusion on Hartwick’s Dean List is an indication of excellent academic work, including the completion of a full course load with at least a 3.5 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale.
Placzek is majoring in mathematics.
Michael Reed Named to Dean’s List at Merrimack College
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Michael Reed, a resident of Westfield, MA, was named to the Spring Semester 2013 Dean’s List at Merrimack College. To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must achieve a 3.25 grade point average or higher, based on a 4.0 grading system.
Michael is a Senior at the College.
Area Students Make the Dean’s List at RIT
ROCHESTER, NY – The following local residents made the Dean’s List for Spring 2013 quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology:
Calvin Carrington of Huntington is a first-year student in the molecular bioscience and biotechnology program in RIT’s College of Science.
Benjamin Wilcox of Southwick is a second-year student in the software engineering program in RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences.
Christine Wzorek of Westfield Earned a Degree from Becker College
WORCESTER, MA – Christine J. Wzorek of Westfield, MA graduated from Becker College, at the 225th Commencement Ceremony held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the Hanover Theatre in Worcester, Mass. Wzorek earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, Magna Cum Laude.
Students who received the honor of Summa Cum Laude graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.9 – 4.0.
Students who received the honor of Magna Cum Laude graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 – 3.89.
Students who received the honor of Cum Laude graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 – 3.69.
Judge Greg Mathis, youth activisit and host of the award-winning television court show, “Judge Mathis,” gave the keynote address. Becker College recognized Mathis with an honorary doctorate of humane letters.
“Judge Mathis’s journey from his youth in Detroit to his distinguished career as a judge, television host, and philanthropist is an inspiring tale of individual achievement and social responsibility,” said Becker College President Robert E. Johnson, Ph.D. “At Becker, we believe there is no limit to the heights that can be reached by individuals who refuse to accept limits and insist on the pursuit of opportunity. Judge Mathis is the personification of that vision.”
In his efforts to reach out to youth both in and outside of the courtroom, Judge Mathis and his wife, Linda, have assisted thousands of youth with their non-profit agency Young Adults Asserting Themselves (Y.A.A.T.), an outreach initiative that provides youth ages 17-25 with career and job opportunities as well as job training and college enrollment assistance.
They have also opened five non-profit preschools in the inner city of Detroit, while continuing to raise funds for a variety of equal justice political and youth causes.
American International College Awards Degrees
SPRINGFIELD, MA – American International College awarded nearly 1,100 undergraduate and graduate degrees at its 2013 Commencement Ceremnony..
Some 300 undergraduate and 790 graduate degrees were awarded to students representing 11 foreign countries and 19 U.S. states. The ceremony took place May 19 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.
Elizabeth Magni of Southwick, a School Administration (CAGS) major, was awarded a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies degree.
Patrick O’Neill of Southwick, a Public Administration (MPA) major, was awarded a Master of Public Administration degree.
Lindsey Pendleton of Southwick, a Nursing (BSN) major, was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
Emilia Berrena of Westfield, a Nursing (BSN) major, was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

93-year-old Mary Raissi Stewart, a 1942 AIC graduate, and A. Craig Brown, treasurer of the AIC Board of Trustees, received honorary degrees at the ceremony. Brown, the keynote speaker, is a member of the Springfield law firm of Doherty, Wallace, Pillsbury and Murphy, P.C.,
Brown emphasized the importance the role of a volunteer played in his life and he urged the graduates to do the same. “Be a passionate volunteer,” he said. “Treat others the way you want to be treated, enjoy the passage of time, and make your lives shine.”
Students Receive Cocurricular Awards at American International College
SPRINGFIELD, MA – Students at American International College were recognized for their participation in campus activities at a ceremony in the Griswold Theatre. More than 70 students received awards at the Co-Curricular Awards night program, as students, parents, faculty and administrators gathered to honor the student leaders.
Brian O’Shaughnessey, vice president for student affairs, said the ceremony is special to the students because it recognizes their involvement in campus life not only by faculty and administrators, but by their peers, as well. Campus involvement is a very important part of the college experience,” O’Shaughnessey told the audience, “and we are very proud of these students who were able to balance school work with clubs and other activities. They have made the AIC campus a better place,” he said.
Marguerite Pratt of Granville, a Senior majoring in Physical Therapy Major (DPT), received the Naomi White-Inniss Award and Model Congress Award.
Tara Scagliarini of Westfield, a Senior majoring in Sociology Major (BA), received the Naomi White-Inniss Award and Harry S. Levitan Award.

Emily Kochanek of Westfield has earned Dean’s List status for the 2013 Spring semester at Lasell College. A member of the Class of 2015 Kochanek is majoring in Communication.
Matthew Salem Honored at Western New England University
SPRINGFIELD, MA – Matthew G. Salem of Westfield received the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering Award for Outstanding Senior during Baccalaureate ceremonies at Western New England University. Salem graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He is a member of the Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Beta Tau, and Alpha Lambda Delta honor societies.
Andrzej Rutkowski Honored at Western New England University
SPRINGFIELD, MA – Andrzej Rutkowski of Westfield received the Dr. E. Louis Raverta Award for Outstanding Part-time Student in Accounting or Finance during Baccalaureate ceremonies at Western New England University. John Coulter, chair of Accounting and Finance and professor of Accounting, presented the award.
Rutkowski graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He works as a mechanical assembler at Kollmorgen and received his associate’s degree from Holyoke Community College.
Rutkowski’s award is given in memory of Dr. E. Loius Raverta to a part-time student majoring in accounting or finance. Raverta, who was himself a part-time learner for all of his academic degrees, was an accounting professor at Western New England and served as department chair.
