Lock your car doors, Southwick

SOUTHWICK – Residents are being urged to lock their vehicle’s doors, even when parked in their own driveways.
This past weekend there was a rash of break-ins to unlocked vehicles across Southwick, said Police Lt. David Ricardi.
“They started last Friday, then overnight Sunday into Monday there were a dozen, then another six or seven more yesterday,” said Ricardi. “So far today, we have not had any reported.”
All vehicles were unlocked and parked in the owner’s driveway.
“There were no forced entries,” said Ricardi, “And they’re taking whatever they can of value.”
Lose change, GPS units, cameras, backpacks and more have been reported stolen.
“People need to lock their doors,” Ricardi said. “Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle, and leave nothing in sight.”
Ricardi said car break-ins are a typical criminal activity during the summer that can easily be prevented by locking doors and keeping an eye on your neighborhood.
“The number one thing is to lock your cars,” Ricardi said on how to prevent the incidents. “The second thing is to keep on any outside lights.”
Southwick Police alerted residents to the issue via the Connect City message system Tuesday.
“We do not have any leads yet, but people have seen suspicious activity and did not report it,” Rcardi said. “We are asking people that if they see something suspicious, no matter what it is, to call.”
If anyone sees suspicious activity in progress, Ricardi said they should call 911.
“If it’s something that is not in progress, they should call the main number,” he said.
