WESTFIELD – Louise Marie (Mountain) Cyr, 92, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Sunday, December 13th, 2025.
Louise was born on September 21st, 1933, in Dexter, a bustling town in the heart of Maine, to Louis Napoleon Mountain and Bibiana (Murphy) Mountain. After graduating high school, she earned her nursing degree from Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine. It was there she met a young civil engineer from Van Buren, Maine, Carroll ‘Fred’ Cyr, who volunteered to empty the mousetraps in her apartment. The two became inseparable, marrying in 1957 and traveling throughout New England and New York before settling in Westfield, where they raised four children.
Louise and Fred walked through life together, modeling hard work, faith, love of family, commitment to one another, and adventure. When Fred fell ill and became incapacitated prior to retirement, Louise was his ever-faithful caregiver for ten years, tending to him with uncomplaining dignity and devotion.
Louise was known for her sunny disposition, gentle laugh, down-to-earth nature and strong faith. She found joy in simple pleasures – a small bouquet of wildflowers, a walk at Stanley Park, a nap with a book or a cup of coffee with a good friend. Summers were spent packing and unpacking for family escapes filled with picnics and camping. Later, Louise and Fred purchased a lake house in her beloved Dexter which became a treasured family gathering place and a hub for water sports, games, laughter and relaxation. These activities led Louise to become an accomplished slalom water-skier, kayaker, cross-country skier – all sports that she and her athletic husband could enjoy together.
Louise was a talented rug braider, baker, knitter, gardener, non-stop walker, and avid reader. She loved to travel and was always curious to discover new places and activities. Her friendships were central to her life, especially during Fred’s long illness. Louise was a humble and lifelong volunteer, sharing her time and talents with many organizations, including the Westfield School System, Scouts, Meals on Wheels and, dearest to her heart, Saint Mary’s Catholic Church. Her kindness and quiet faith were the foundation of her life, leading her to serve as an eucharistic minister and guiding her actions throughout her years. She was honored with the St. Pius X Award in 1988.
Louise was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Carroll Fred Cyr; her brother Jere Mountain; brothers and sisters-in-law Charles (Joanne) Mountain and Philip (Mimi) Mountain; brother-in-law Art Benzel; and her great-granddaughter Isabella Herchenroeder.
She is survived by her children: Mary (David) Rodrigues of Houston, Texas; Patrick (Karen) Cyr of Farmington, Maine; Cathleen (Randy) Hildack of Westfield; and Peter (Michellene) Cyr of Wiscassett, Maine. She was a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren: Jessica (Pat) Galligan; Heather (Matt) Whalen; Matthew Rodrigues; Kathryn (Cory) Herchenroeder; Rebecca (Bailey) French; Nicholas (Mackenzie) Cyr; Laura (John) Gourde; as well as two step grandchildren Tyler (Keira) Hildack; and Taylor (Connor) DeVivo. She was blessed with nine great-grandchildren: Finley and Charlotte Galligan; Paxton and Hadley Whalen; Paisley and Carter French; Anderson Hildack; Aiden Cyr; and Reilly Herchenroeder.
She also leaves her sister Cynthia (Ken) Robinson of Dexter Maine; sisters-in-law Marge Benzel of Lincoln, NE and Barbara (Larry) Weidinger of Bellevue, NE; and well as many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the caring and compassionate staff at Armbrook Village, the Atrium at Cardinal Drive and Beacon Hospice. Visitation for Louise will take place on Friday, January 2nd, 2026, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Firtion-Adams Funeral Home, 76 Broad Street in Westfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 30 Bartlett Street, Westfield. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Dexter, Maine.
