Make the ‘drive’ for troops

WESTFIELD – Although the number of Western Massachusetts troops serving abroad has decreased over the past year, local servicemen and women could still benefit from a “drive” overseas.

The Care For Our Troops is seeking out local residents to “pitch,” “putt,” or “drive” a golf ball for fun in its second annual Care For Our Troops Golf Tournament Friday, June 29.

More than a dozen teams have already signed up for the charitable organization’s local golf tourney at Tekoa Country Club, but 20 openings still remain.

The deadline for sign-ups is June 22.

“We’re trying to bring the community together to celebrate the people from our area who have joined the armed forces,” said Michele Cabral, the organization’s president. “We’re not looking for expert golfers – although they’re welcome to join – but people who want to have a good time that day.”

People who are unable to golf that day are still invited to participate in the social hour, JetBlue Challenge and dinner ($30 per person). The golf package ($100 per person) includes golf, a cart, lunch, social hour, JetBlue Challenge, player gift package, a one-year subscription to Golf Digest or Golf World, snacks, and prizes.

The funds raised from the golf tournament will benefit the Care for Our Troops Package Program, which provides necessary and wanted supplies to men and women from the community serving overseas. According to Cabral, there are some 40-plus military area personnel currently serving the country from locations such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Germany.

The Care For Our Troops organization is made up of volunteers who have come together to increase community awareness, pride and support for the men and women who have a connection to the local community and are currently serving in the armed forces, and for veterans.
