Scam targets job seekers

WESTFIELD – Persons seeking work who utilize on-line advertisements for their job search should be aware of an on-line scam that has been used it victimize job seekers, people who can usually least afford to lose their money.
City police report that a resident recently reported being taken in by a job offer she found online which ended up costing her $1,850.
The woman said that she apparently found a job and was hired online.
Her new employer had explained that she would need a computer and peripheral hardware for her new duties and told her that she would receive a check to purchase the equipment from a specified vendor.
When the woman received the $1,850 check in the mail, she deposited it in her account and sent an order for the hardware, and payment, to the seller her new employer had directed her to.
No equipment was received but her new employer sent another e-mail which told her that additional equipment would be needed. She received an additional check, for the same amount, for deposit in her account.
However, before the woman was able to make the additional order, her banker informed her that the first check she had deposited had been found to be fraudulent and, accordingly, her account would be debited $1,850.
The suddenly jobless woman did not buy the additional equipment her “employer” had urged her to purchase.
