Martin J. Canty

 

Westfield – Martin John Canty, (1949-2016)  Born in Springfield, Massachusetts and a lifelong resident of Westfield. Martin was known to hisflag friends and family as McGyver, able to fix and build anything. One of his greatest gifts of all was the gift of giving to others. Martin gave to all, his advise was priceless and he was always willing to help anyone no matter what the project.  He is predeceased by his parents Maurice and Eugenie (Storozuk) Canty as well as his two brothers, Michael and John.  He is survived by his wife Peggyann (Lemire) who were married for 46 years after falling in love in the 8th grade. Loving father to Bridget and her husband Chip Barber and favorite title – Pop to his only grandson Christopher. He leaves behind his sister Maureen Sabadosa and her husband and Marty’s best friend Bill. His sisters-in-law Bonnie (Michael) and her partner Gene Foutier, Martha Lemire (Philip), Joan and Bryan Sabadosa, Denise and John Fisher and Pamela and Robert Pettengill.  Uncle and Great-Uncle to several nieces and nephews. Called friend by many throughout the years including lifetime friends and golf partners Christopher and Patricia King.

He proudly served for 23 years in the Massachusetts Air National Guard, based at the 104th in Westfield. He was an ironworker in his younger years with Local 357, an aircraft engineer with Fairchild Industries, radio technician at World Radio Sales, heavy equipment operator and mechanic for Burke Brothers, and retired as an Engineering Inspector for MASS DOT. He served 14 years as the Ward 5 City Councilor in Westfield, was a proud member of the Westfield Son’s of Erin and the Post 124 American Legion. Martin was adored by his family and his friends and will be truly missed.The funeral service for Marty will be held on Thursday September 8th at 11 a.m. from the Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
