SOUTHBRIDGE – Mary J. (Popowich) Liese, 94, (1923-2017) passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2017 at Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge. She was born in Hartford, CT to the late Anthony and Josephine (Sobasko) Popowich and was a 1941 graduate of Westfield High School. She worked in the Springfield Armory as a Woman Ordinance Worker making windage adjustment knobs on the Garand Rifle and also for the US Postal Service bulk mail center in Springfield as a package repair/ re-wrapper. Mary enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, supported Old Sturbridge Village and loved to travel, especially Hawaii. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, William B. Liese in 1972, a daughter Rosemary Liese in 2003, her brother Joseph Popowich in 1991, and her sister Helen in 2007. Mary is survived by her son James B. Liese and his wife Lisa of Stafford Springs and her daughter Laura Liese of Palmer, two grandsons Kevin of Woodstock, CT an James of Seattle, WA and six great grandchildren. A funeral home service will be held on Friday at 12 noon in the Firtion Adams FS, 76 Broad St. Westfield, followed by burial in Pine Hill Cemetery, Western Ave. Westfield.
