
WESTFIELD – Mary Theresa (Cymes) Zyra, 95, passed away peacefully on October 30th at Vantage of Westfield with her loving husband by her side. Mary was born in Easthampton, MA on January 4th, 1930 to a large and loving family. She was the youngest of eight children born to the late Alexander Cymes and Mary Wadroski Cymes.
Mary grew up in Easthampton and was educated at the Sacred Heart Catholic school system. After graduating High School, she went to work at Stanley Home Products in Easthampton where she was an inspector. While at Stanley Home products she met the love of her life, Michael Zyra, Jr. They married on May 1st, 1965, and have enjoyed 60 years together. Mary and Mike built their dream home in Westfield where they lived happily together until Mary’s passing.
Mary was a devoted catholic and was a member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Westfield. She never missed a service if she could help it. Family was very important to Mary, and she was very proud of the fact that one of her sisters became a Nun. Mary loved children and enjoyed being around and interacting with her many nieces and nephews.
In her free time Mary enjoyed needlepoint and reading good books until her eyesight gave out. She and Mike enjoyed traveling, especially going on bus trips. They also enjoyed going out to eat several times a week.
Left to cherish Mary’s memory is her loving and devoted husband Michael. She also leaves her nieces Monica Kuniey Hanson (Peter), Martha Cymes Wholthman, and Debra Cymes Tines as well as her nephews Richard Hanlon (Maryann), David Cymes, Jamie Cymes, Jeffrey Zyra (Katy), Gary Zyra and Jonathan Zyra. She also leaves her sister-in-law Margaret Zyra and many great nieces and nephews.
Mary was predeceased by her parents Alexander and Mary Cymes and her siblings Joseph Cymes, Stanley Cymes, Anthony and Marilyn Cymes, sister Mary Fabian Cymes, Jessie Cymes Kuniey and Fred Kuniey, Connie Cymes Pacocha and Stanley Pacocha, and Jean Cymes Hanlon and Robert Hanlon and her brother-in-law Richard Zyra.
A sincere thank you to the nurses and staff at the Vantage Nursing Home for the wonderful care that Mary received while she was there.
A calling hour will be held on Thursday morning November 6th from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. at the Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield. A funeral Mass will follow in Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church, 127 Holyoke Road, Westfield at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Westfield.
