Massachusetts firefighters trapped in burning home rescued

SAUGUS, Mass. (AP) — Three firefighters who became trapped inside a burning home in suburban Boston and were running out of oxygen have been rescued by colleagues.

Saugus Chief Michael Newbury tells The Daily Item of Lynn that three of his men were overwhelmed by fire and heat on the second floor of the house just off U.S. Route 1 on Wednesday morning. They were rescued by a Saugus fire captain and two Malden firefighters.

Newbury says “They saved the lives of my men.”

The three residents of the home, including an 84-year-old woman, her daughter and her granddaughter, made it out safely.

The blaze was causing traffic problems on the highway during the morning commute.
