WHS smacks down Belchertown

The Westfield High School boys’ volleyball team continues to smack the competition.
Westfield cruised to a 25-15, 25-18, 25-14 win over host Belchertown yesterday.
The Bombers seized a quick lead, never relented, and even managed to sub in players throughout the final set of the match.
In the first set, Westfield maintained a slim lead throughout, until gaining a comfortable 22-16 advantage late, and, following a Belchertown timeout, scored three of the last four points.
Alex Merenkov (9 kills, 4 digs, 2 aces) dominated in the middle set, drilling one kill after another to help the Bombers secure the frame.
In the final set, Westfield changed up its lineup, giving some alternates additional court time. Bombers’ regular Evan Benoit even added back-to-back aces late before the final point.
“We have some (non-starters) doing well in practice who have earned a shot to go out there and play,” Westfield coach Tyler Wingate said.
Wingate said junior C.J. McMahon is one of those players who posted impressive results yesterday in spot duty, noting McMahon’s strong backcourt play, solid passing, and digs (5).
Senior Nick Zampini made 8 kills and 2 blocks in his first varsity start. Jason Burnusuz finished with 29 assists.Westfield improved to 11-5.
